DAULAT BEG OLDI – MILITARY BASE

Daulat Beg Oldi MILITARY BASE lies near the eastern most point of the Karakoram Range in a cold desert region in the far north of India, just 8 km south of the China border and 9 km northwest of the Aksai Chin Line of Actual Control between China and India.
Other than Siachen Glacier military bases, it is India’s northernmost settlement.

DETAILS

Being at the base of the Karakoram Pass, this place has immense strategic implications, which is why the Indian Army has been at DBO since the late 1950s.
DBO is adjacent to the Chip Chap river, lies 8 km south and 9 km west of the Line of Actual Control (LAC) with China. The air distance to the Karakoram Pass from DBO is just 10 km.

NOTES

Daulat Beg Oldie also has an airstrip at an altitude of 5065 meters (16,614 feet), one of the world’s highest airstrip.

ADVANCED LANDING GROUND

The base was established during the Sino-Indian conflict in 1962, with the first landing by Squadron Leader C.K.S Raje who set a record for the world’s highest aircraft landing at the time.
Work was undertaken to make the airfield operational again, and was marked on 31 May 2008, when an Indian Air Force An-32 landed.

BRIDGE

In October 2019, the 430 m Colonel Chewang Rinchen Setu over Shyok river was inaugurated that joins Durbuk to DBO in Eastern Ladakh.
Along with it, the Siachen Glacier area of Ladakh was declared open for tourists by the Government of India.

GALWAV VALLEY ROLE

From the DSDBO road, a road branches off towards Galwan Valley, a hill feature, which India wants to protect because it overlooks the area around the main road. The branch road has prompted the stand-off in Galwan Valley.
Indian troops have been patrolling up to this area, but the idea now is to have a road access and presence here. China has objected to this and doesn’t want India to utilise the DSDBO road to its full potential, which has led to the ongoing confrontations.
