Current United Kingdom Prime Minister, Boris Johnson, is set to visit India in April, 2021. Boris Johnson was earlier supposed to visit India in the beginning of the 2021 for the Republic Day Celebrations (26January) as the chief guest but he cancelled his visit because of increasing COVID-19 cases in the UK.
UK Government also mentioned that, a British aircraft will be deployed in the region in light of the visit of Boris Johnson. During the visit, UK government will look towards boosting the UK’s opportunities and countering the influence of China in the Indo-Pacific region. United Kingdom government also called the Indo-Pacific region as the geopolitical centre of the world.
India-United Kingdom ties
PM Boris Johnson will visit India in a big to strengthen India-United Kingdom ties and counter China’s influence. Boris Johnson also aims to increase the focus on position of the UK in the world.
United Kingdom-China ties
The United Kingdom and the People’s Republic of China have stressed out because of issues like Coronavirus pandemic and controversial Hong Kong national security law. The relation was further tensed after Britain denied China’s active role in the Britain’s 5G network. This relation is expected to further move to a negative trajectory because of deployment of British aircraft called “Queen Elizabeth aircraft carrier” in the South China Sea.
Foreign Policies of United Kingdom
The United Kingdom highlighted that, the government will lay down the post-Brexit defence and foreign policy priorities of the country with the objective of expanding its influence in Indo-Pacific region. It also seeks to preserve its strong relations with USA. The statement from the UK government also enlisted that defence of democracy, human rights and safety from the terrorism are the fundamental components of the foreign policy of United Kingdom. The statement also highlighted the importance of USA and sought to establish the trade deal with it.
