Prime Minister Narinder Modi is addressing at the United Nations for the 1st time after India won its membership in UNSC. United Nations Security Council consists of 15 members Out of this, 10 are non-permanent members and 5 are permanent members. India won its membership as non-permanent member for two-year term. US, UK, Russia, China and France are permanent members of UNSC.

The ECOSOC holds high level meet yearly. The United Nations Economic and Social Council was established as 1 of the 6 principal organs of the UN. The 1st meeting of United Nations Economic and Social Council was held in 1946. India was the first president of ECOSOC.

Significance

The event gains its significance as this is the first address of Prime Minister Narinder Modi to a larger members of the United Nations after India won its membership in United Nations Security Council winning 184 votes out of 192 polled.
