Recently, IUCN (International Union for Conservation of Nature) announced the winners of the first ever International Ranger Awards have been announced. The award has been provided by the IUCN and World Commission on Protected Areas to 10 professionals across the globe. The International Ranger Award was instituted in 2020 through collaboration between the IUCN WCPA, the International Ranger Federation, Global Wildlife Conservation, and Conservation Allies. The International Ranger Award aims to recognize the remarkable work of rangers in protected and conserved areas around the world. The nominations for the awards were open from 17 November to 31 December 2020.
- Mahinder Giri has become the only ranger from Asia to win the prestigious International Ranger Award. He has been deployed at Motichur range of Rajaji Tiger Reserve for the past few years.
- 10 professionals have been awarded with the International Ranger Award this year.
- The Award is given by International Union for Conservation of Nature and World Commission on Protected Areas.
- All the winners will get a prize money of $ 10,000 (Rupees 7,26,150)
Why Mahinder Giri chosen for the Award?
Mahinder Giri has been awarded for his efforts in curbing human-wildlife conflict in and around Rajaji and his role in the ongoing tiger translocation exercise from Corbett Tiger Reserve to Rajaji Tiger Reserve.
