Government of India is celebrated National Statistics Day is observed every year on June 29 to popularize use of Statistics in daily life and sensitize public as to how Statistics helps in shaping and framing policies. 2019 is the 13th edition of National Statistics Day.
June 29 was chosen to acknowledge the invaluable contributions made by Prasanta Chandra Mahalanobis (Indian scientist) in establishing the National Statistical System. June 29 is the birth anniversary of Prasanta Chandra Mahalanobis.
National Statistics Day was celebrated since 2007. World Statistics Day is celebrated on 20 October every year.

About P C Mahalanobis
Prof. P C Mahalanobis OBE, FNA, FASc, FRS was an Indian statistician and scientist. He is one of the members of the first Planning Commission of free India. He won Padma Vibhushan in 1968. Prof. P C Mahalanobis was served as the Chairman of the UN Sub Commission on Statistical Sampling from 1947 to 1951.
