“Inji” world’s oldest known orangutan has died at the age of 61 at the Oregon Zoo. Inji was a Sumatran female.

  • The world’s oldest orangutan was euthanized at the Oregon Zoo in the USA.
  • This was done after her health deteriorated recently. Inji was in a lot of pain and was unable to move.
  • The announcement of her death was made by the Zoo authorities on the official website of the zoo stating that she died on 9th January.
  • The Orangutans generally do not live after foutry years and Inji managed to live till 61 years.
  • Although the correct age of Inji is not known, it is believed she was born in the wild of Sumatra in the 1960s and was brought to the zoo on 31st January 1961.
  • The Orangutans are apes that are native to Malaysia and Indonesia.
  • Thev Orangutans have three species- Bornean, Sumatran, and Tapanuli. Currently, all 3 species have been designated as “critically endangered” by the International Union for Conservation of Nature.

Before this, Sumatran Orangutan called Puan died in 2018 at the age of 62 years in Australia. Orangutan was euthanized in Perth Zoo.

A female gorilla named Bua Noi was in the news after American singer Cher wrote a letter demanding to look into the situation of the gorilla. Bua Noi lives in Pata Zoo of Thailand since 1988. The conditions of the zoo are very bad. Before this, efforts of Cher saved the world’s loneliest elephant- Kaavan from Pakistan. Kaavan was shifted to Cambodia after the singer’s efforts.
