Highlights

8th edition of SLINEX 3-day Naval exercise of India and Sri Lanka are to begin from 19 Oct 2020. Annual joint exercise is to be held off coast of Trincomalee. It is to be conducted in non-contact at-sea only format. This strategy has been adopted due to pandemic.

Points To Note

  • Naval drill will include series of anti-air weapons firing, cross deck flying operations to fine tune high degree of inter-operability.
  • Indian Navy is to deploy INS Kiltan (anti-submarine warfare corvette) and INS Kamorta (Kamorta-class corvette), Chetak helicopters (Light utility helicopter) and Dornier maritime patrol aircrafts in the joint exercise.  
  • Sri Lankan Navy is to be represented by SLN Ships Sayura (offshore patrol vessel) and Gajabahu (training ship).
  • In 2019, 7th edition of SLINEX exercise was conducted in Andhra Pradesh’s Visakhapatnam.
  • Naval exercise is being conducted in consonance with India’s SAGAR (Security and Growth for all in the Region) and Neighbourhood first policy of India.

Port of Trincomalee

In 2017, Sri lanka’s Trincomalee port was offered to India. Sri Lanka wants to maintain neutral stand between India and china. Thus, Sri Lanka offered the Trincomalee port to India. While offering the Trincomalee port, Sri Lanka claimed that the experience of the country with Chinese on the Hambantota port was not beneficial. Also, Sri Lanka is facing is heavy debt burden due to the Hambantota port.

SLINEX

SLINEX is a joint naval exercise between India & Sri Lanka. First edition of SLINEX exercise began in 2005.

Mitra Shakti

Mitra Shakti is a joint military training exercise held between India & Sri Lanka. Last year both india and Sri lanka conduct 7th edition of the Mitra Shakti military exercise was held to enhance interoperability and operational efficiency of India and Sri Lanka.

Other Military Exercises

India holds Vajra Prahar and Yudh Abhyas exercise with the United States of America. India also holds Dharma Guardian with Japan. Hand in Hand Exercise joint military between India and China.

Hand-in-Hand

India and China joint military exercise Hand-in-Hand 8th edition was held in December 2019 in Umroi, Meghalaya. The main objective of the Hand-in-Hand exercise is to enhance interoperability between India and China and counter terrorism.
