L&T: Larsen & Toubro Limited delivered a Booster Segment, the first hardware for ISRO Gaganyaan Mission. L&T has delivered the module ahead of schedule.

Booster segment in a rocket

Booster Segment is an engine or can also be a booster rocket. It is either the first stage of a multi stage rocket or a shorter burning rocket used to augment the take off thrust of the space vehicle. In simple words, the booster segments solve 2 purposes

  • In Low Earth Orbit (LEO) rockets, booster segments are used to launch a space craft
  • L&T Booster Segments act as thrust providers when the Gaganyaan mission is beyond low earth orbit (LEO).

Here the ISRO Gaganyaan Mission aims to send astronauts to Low Earth Orbit (400 km from earth surface) and so here the L&T booster segment will help to launch a space craft.

Booster Segment of L&T

Larsen & Toubro has provided a couple of S200 solid rocket boosters. S200 solid rocket is a high thrust solid propellant strap on booster. They will provide huge thrust that is required for the lift off. Booster Segment for Gaganyaan was developed at Mumbai’s L&T Powai Aerospace Manufacturing Unit. Larsen & Toubro plays a key role in the ISRO Gaganyaan and has been a partner of ISRO for over 5 decades (50 years). Former ISRO Missions Mangalyaan and Chandrayaan missions are launched with the help of L&T. Booster segment is 8.5 m in length, 3.2 metres diameter and 5.5 tonnes weighs.

ISRO Gaganyaan Mission

Indian Human Spaceflight Programme Gaganyaan, that is to carry 3 indian astronauts to space. Gaganyaan is the first crewed mission of India. In December 2020, ISRO will launch uncrewed Gaganyaan mission and in December 2021 ISRO will launch crewed Gaganyaan mission.

Gaganyaan mission will be launched through ISRO’s GSLV Mk III launch vehicle. It is a 3 stage heavy lift Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle (GSLV). GSLV Mk III is designed to carry 4 tonnes of satellites into the Geosynchronous Transfer Orbit (GTO) or 10 tonnes of satellite to the Low Earth Orbit (LEO).

The Gaganyaan mission will launch a capsule that will orbit the earth at 400 km altitude up to 7 days. When the orbit is at a height of less than 1000 kilometer, it is called Low Earth Orbit. L&T delivers first launch hardware to ISRO L&T delivers first launch hardware to ISRO
