Recently Defence Minister of India Rajnath Singh handed over three indigenously systems developed by DRDO to the chiefs of the Defence Forces. IMSAS: Indian Maritime Situational Awareness System was handed over to the Indian Naval Chief Admiral Karambir Singh. The Astra Mk-1 was handed over to the Air Chief Marshal Rakesh Kumar Singh Bhadauria. BOSS, Border Surveillance System was handed over to the Army Chief General Manoj Mukund Naravane.
The Indian Maritime Situational Awareness System is an indigenous, high performance intelligent software system that provides Global Maritime Situational picture and analytical capabilities to the Indian Navy. The IMSAS provides maritime operational picture to the ships at sea from Naval Headquarters. The system was developed by the CAIR (Centre for Artificial Intelligence and Robotics). The IMSAS was developed based on Artificial Intelligence and CAIR operates under DRDO focusing on robotics and Artificial Intelligence.
In order to strengthen its surveillance in the IOR (Indian Ocean Region), India has been building its own maritime awareness and mission planning measures. One such is TRIGUN. Trigun was developed by DRDO’s CAIR. It has the capability to collect all the data about military and civil vessel, aircraft and submarines. The first phase of the system was completed in the year 2012, second phase in March by 2020 and third phase is to be completed by the 2024. This sophistication of TRIGUN increases the awareness capabilities of Indian Navy and is a part of MDAP (Marine Domain Awareness Programme).
The BOSS is an all-weather electronic surveillance system. The system was developed by the DRDO’s Instruments Research and Development Establishment operating. The BOSS system is deployed in Ladakh border area. It monitors LAC by automatically detecting intrusions in harsh high-altitude sub-zero temperature areas with remote operation capability.
