9 August 1945, a second atom bomb Fat Man was dropped on Nagasaki, Japan by the United States of America. The US had already planned to drop their second atom bomb on 11 August in the event of such recalcitrance, but due to bad weather expected for that day pushed the date up to 9 August.

A specially adapted B-29 bomber, called “Bockscar” after its usual commander, Frederick Bock, took off from Tinian Island under the command of Major Charles W. Sweeney. Nagasaki was a shipbuilding center, the very industry intended for destruction. the number killed is estimated at anywhere between 60 thousand and 80 thousand.
