7 November observed as a National Cancer Awareness Day every year in India. According to the WHO report, Cancer is the 2nd leading cause of death.

National Cancer Day

In 2014, first edition of National Cancer Day was observed. It coincided with the birth anniversary of scientist Marie Curie. Marie Curie known for French-Polish physicist who conducted pioneering research on radioactivity. Marie Curie won the nobel prize for discovering radium and plutonium. Marie Curie was the first woman to win Nobel prize. Marie Curie died as she was exposed to large amounts of radiation.

Current Scenario

According to report, More than 18 million (1.8 crore) cases of cancer were reported in 2018,. Of these, 1.5 million (15 lakh) were in India alone. In 2018, around 0.8 million (8 lakh) people died in India due to cancer and around 9.5 million (95 Lakhs) died globally.

4 Feb World Cancer Day

Every year 4th of February observed as a World Cancer Day. The Day is marked by the WHO and several other world organizations.

Rashtriya Arogya Nidhi Scheme

Government of India launched Rashtriya Arogya Nidhi scheme to address financial needs of the people suffering from cancer. It also covers other specified rare diseases.

The Scheme focuses on people living below poverty line (BPL). It addresses people suffering from life threatening diseases related to heart, liver, kidney. Government servants and their family members are not eligible under this scheme. Also, the beneficiaries covered under Pradhan Mantri Arogya Yojana are not covered under the scheme.

National Cancer Awareness Day

In 2014, Government of India marks first National Cancer Awareness Day. The day is being marked for early detection and educate people against living cancer causing lifestyle.

National Cancer Grid

National Cancer Grid was formed in 2012. It is a network of major cancer centres, patient groups, charitable institutions in the country.

International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC)

India is a member of International Agency for Research on Cancer organization. There are a total of 27 members in the IARC. The main objective of the IARC is to promote international collaboration in cancer research. 7 November National Cancer Awareness Day
