26 July India marked Kargil Vijay Diwas. DM Rajnath Singh paid tribute at National War Memorial at India Gate. The day marks India’s victory over Pakistan in the Kargil war on May 1999 – July 1999.

“Operation Vijay” launched by GOI on July 26, 1999 and Indian Government declared victory after 3-month long battle in Kargil.

Kargil War 1999

The Kargil War is an armed conflict between India and Pakistan that took place along LOC. India used its Air Force on a large scale for the 1st time in Kargil war (Ladakh) 1999 after India-Pakistan War in 1971. Kargil is located very close to LOC. Kargil is a town in Kargil district and the capital of UT of Ladakh. 

Operation Vijay

Operation Vijay was launched twice by the Indian Army. The first Operation Vijay was launched in 18 Dec 1961 – 19 Dec 1961 that led to the Annexation of Goa ,Anjediva islands (It is part of Goa, although the nearest land is part of Karnataka) and Daman and Diu (Indian union territory).

In 1999, second vijay operation was launched. However, the Kargil Vijay Diwas is marked on the culmination of Kargil war 1999.

Operation White Sea

The operation White Sea (Operation Safed Sagar) was also launched by Indian Air Force during Kargil war. Under White Sea Airforce and Indian Army jointly acted against Pakistan Army.
