22 April is celebrated as a World Earth Day every year in the world. The first World Earth Day was celebrated in the year 1970.
The 2021 Day
In 2021, USA President Joe Biden has invited leaders of Top 40 economies including Indian PM Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping to the Leader’s Climate Summit. The virtual meeting is to be held on the occasion of World Earth Day.
Theme for 2021 World Earth Day: Restore our Earth
In the year 1969, American Peace Activist John McConnell proposed to celebrate World Earth Day to honour the earth. It was first proposed to be celebrated on 21th March 1970, which is the first day of spring in the northern hemisphere.
2016 Paris Agreement
On the occasion of the Day, in the 2016, the landmark Paris Agreement was signed by USA, China and other 120 countries.
About the Day
The Day celebrations are organised by Earth Society Foundation. It was founded by John McConnel.
Equinox Earth Day
Annually, Equinox Earth Day is celebrated on March 20 (or 21). It marks the arrival of spring in the Northern hemisphere and autumn in southern hemisphere. It is also called the Equinoctial Earth Day. The first Equinox Earth Day was celebrated in the year 1970.
Japanese Peace Bell and Earth Day
The Peace Bell is rung twice or thrice a year. Once during the celebrations of World Earth Day that falls on 22 April.
It is also rung on Equinox Earth Day. The Japanese Peace Bell was donated to the United Nations by Japan.
Apart from these days, sometimes it is also rung on every opening day of the UN General Assembly (UNGA) yearly session. This is usually held in the month of September.
