11 October observed as a International Day of the Girl Child. The Day is celebrated every year by United Nations Children’s Fund, is a United Nations. In 2020, International Day of the Girl Child is celebrated under the following theme

Theme for 2020: My voice, our equal future

In 2020, International Day of Girl Child marks 25 years of Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action for working towards empowering girls. International Day of Girl Child celebrates importance, power and potential of girls globally. The day also highlights girl needs and problems they face.

United Nations Sustainable Development Goals

United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 5 aims to achieve Gender Equality by 2030. Women do 2.6 times more unpaid and domestic work than men. The 2019 Sustainable Development Index measure says that gender equality is aligned to 14 of 17 Sustainable Development Index in 129 countries.

History

International Day of the Girl Child began as Plan international in Canada. It was begun by an NGO. Later the Non-Governmental Organisation requested the UN to mark the day internationally.

India

India celebrates both National Girl Child Day and International Day of the Girl. The National Girl Child Day is celebrated on 24 January annually.

National Girl Child Day

National Girl Child Day is celebrated to create awareness on the issue of declining Child Sex Ratio in india. It aims to create a positive environment in valuing a girl child. In 2008, the day was initiated.

Beti Bachao Beti Padao campaign

In 2018, Government of India launched nationwide Beti Bachao Beti Padao campaign. GoI campaign aims to provide education to every girl child across the country. It also addresses the issue of declining Child Sex Ratio. The main objective of the scheme is to protect the girl child ensuring them protection.

Beti Bachao Beti Padao scheme is a tri-ministerial effort. It is implemented by Ministry of Women and Child Development, Ministry of Human Resource Development and Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.

What is Beijing Declaration?

Beijing Declaration was adopted at the 4h World Conference on women in 1995. During the World conference leaders from all over the world agreed on a plan to achieve global equality.
